Cut, engraved or printed vinyl: which finish should you choose?

Two round decorations can look similar in photos while being very different. To compare them, look at what creates the design: openings in the material, a surface treatment or an added image.

Words in product titles do not always tell the whole story. Descriptions, detail photos and the seller’s answers should help you understand the object you will receive.

Cut: the design uses solid areas and open spaces

In a cut-out decoration, parts of the material are removed. The background behind the piece therefore contributes to its appearance. A dark silhouette may look clear against a light wall and less distinct against a busy background.

Look at the outlines, narrow sections and fine details. These affect both the appearance and handling of the piece. A close-up is more useful than a lifestyle photo for examining them.

Engraved: the design is worked into the surface

An engraved design is marked into the surface. This does not necessarily mean it is cut all the way through. Contrast depends on the material and process: examine the specific design rather than assuming its colour or depth from the word “engraved”.

A piece can combine several techniques. Ask which areas are cut through and which are treated on the surface if the photos do not make this clear.

Printed: the image adds colour and detail

An image printed onto a surface can reproduce colours, a photograph or details without relying on openings in the material. This alone does not tell you what the object is made of: a record-shaped piece may also be an imitation.

Check the material, dimensions and customisable area separately. An image in the centre of a record and a design covering its whole surface suit different projects.

Four points for comparing product pages

  1. The material: a pre-owned record or another material?
  2. The design: cut through, marked on the surface or printed?
  3. The result: a silhouette, text, colour or photograph?
  4. The delivered item: are dimensions, accessories and installation instructions specified?

Choose according to your intention

For a silhouette that reveals the wall behind it, look at cut-out designs. To reproduce a photo or preserve exact colours, explicitly check that the technique and material meet those needs. No finish is automatically better: the right choice depends on the image and its use.

MaggaM offers decorations made from laser-cut pre-owned records. For a logo or text project, discuss the result you want through the personalisation page.

This comparison concerns decorative objects. A record-like appearance does not guarantee that the item can be played.
