At MaggaM, cutting transforms the existing material into a design. \u201cA second life\u201d describes this change of use without assigning it a quantified environmental benefit.<\/p><h2>What stays and what changes<\/h2><p>The record remains the basis of the creation: its shape, surface and grooves can contribute to its character. Cutting changes its function, however. The finished piece is decorative and no longer intended for playback on a turntable.<\/p><p>Traces of the material\u2019s previous life may remain. These alone cannot reveal its history or playback condition before transformation. The product description and photos remain the reference for understanding what is offered.<\/p><h2>Second life, reuse and recycling: different terms<\/h2><p>In the terminology presented by ADEME, reuse (r\u00e9emploi) means using a product again for the same purpose before it has become waste. Reselling an object so it can continue serving the same purpose is therefore different from changing its function.<\/p><p>Recycling refers to a waste-treatment operation that produces materials or products. Cutting an existing record into a decoration does not mean that its material has been recycled.<\/p><p>For the creations shown here, \u201ctransforming pre-owned records\u201d and \u201ca second life as decoration\u201d are the clearest descriptions. They imply neither entirely recycled material nor guaranteed recyclability of the finished object.<\/p><h2>What this approach does not establish<\/h2><p>Transforming existing material is not enough to determine a creation\u2019s full environmental footprint. Preparation, manufacture, packaging, transport and useful life also matter. Without a specific study, it would be misleading to claim a quantity of CO\u2082 saved or zero impact.<\/p><p>Likewise, an old record is not automatically worthless for listening or collecting. If you own records that matter to you, have their condition and value assessed before considering an irreversible transformation.
